This program is open to all TWUC members.
Through this program, The Writers’ Union of Canada
funds author visits to public venues across Canada. The Union
cannot solicit readings on behalf of members. The host organization
must contact and arrange a date with an author before applying
for funding.
To be eligible for funding, the reading(s) must be held in
a publicly accessible venue (a library, book store, festival
location, etc.) and advertised to the community at large.
Fundraisers are NOT eligible for funding.
This program cannot fund conferences, workshops, roundtable
discussions, fundraising events, or book prizes.
This program cannot fund readings for which honoraria and
travel costs are funded by another Canada Council program.
Once the author and date have been secured, an application
form has been received, and funding for a reading has been
confirmed, the host organization will receive a Booking Confirmation
Form and Invoice for the administrative fee(s) $70 + HST per
full (solo) reading or $35 + HST per half (joint) reading.
The administrative fees are due 30 days after receiving the
invoice. Administrative fees are non-refundable.
Completed applications must be received at least FOUR (4)
weeks in advance of the reading date.
The Union pays the author a $250 honorarium per full (solo)
reading or a $125 honorarium per half (joint) reading upon
receipt of the author's completed Reading Report and Invoice.
There is a maximum of $250 (solo)/$125 (joint) in travel expenses
per reading available. The host organization is responsible
for the author's accommodations and meals. There is a maximum
of 2 full or 4 half readings per host, and 2 full or 4 half
readings per author, per fiscal year.
Please note: The Union will not refund reading
fees and travel expenses to hosts. TWUC reimburses members
after receiving a reading report and invoice, with original
itemized receipts, after the event has taken place. Under
this program, TWUC can not reimburse any travel expenses from
outside of Canada.
Copies of advertisements must be sent to the Union
when they become available. All publicity materials must acknowledge
the financial assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts
through The Writers' Union of Canada, with logos.
TWUC's funding period runs from April 1 to March 31 and is
divided up into FALL (September 1 to March 31) and SPRING
(April 1 to August 31) sessions. Readings are limited and
are given on a first-come, first-served basis. There are a
limited number of readings allotted to each session. When
the funds are used up, the program is closed for the year.
