This program is open to all TWUC members for tours within
Ontario. Applications for tours in 2011 will be accepted starting
September 7, 2010. The deadline for submitting applications
will be January 17, 2011.
Program Information
This program provides elementary and secondary schools in
Northern Ontario the opportunity to have Canadian authors
visit the classroom and interact with students at no cost
to the school. The deadline for submitting an application
is January 15 of each year.
The Writers-in-the-Schools Northern Ontario program is funded
with the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council. Authors must
be members of The Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC). You
can find a list of TWUC members who are interested in participating
in northern Ontario school visits here: list
of participating authors.
Under the Northern Ontario Writers-in-the-Schools Program,
The Writers’ Union of Canada will subsidize the full
cost of the author’s fee and will reimburse all travel
and accommodation expenses within Ontario when the author
visits three schools, within the same region of northern Ontario,
on the same tour (exceptions can be made for remote schools).
Travel and accommodations arrangements will be organized by
the school and/or author with the assistance of TWUC if necessary.
The Writers’ Union of Canada will pay the author a
flat reading fee of $500 for a full-day reading (3-4 sessions).
Each member of the Writers’ Union is eligible for one
Northern Ontario tour per fiscal year. Readings in this program
do not interfere with author reading limits in the OAC
WITS Program. Please note that the availability of the
author is based on the author’s schedule. As such, it
is important to list alternative authors.
Funding for this program is limited. Priority will be given
to remote regions that have not had funding through the OAC
WITS program. The deadline for submitting an application is
January 15 of each year.
