BIO
Biography

I am a best-selling author with a passion for exploring the overlooked moments of popular culture and reputation for creating unique, personal narratives.

I’ve written twenty books covering a range of topics and genres… from critically acclaimed fiction like Song of Kosovo (Goose Lane) and The Encyclopedia of Lies (Anvil Press), to best-selling non-fiction like Consider the Fish: Fishing for Canada from Campbell River to Petty Harbour and An Unfinished Conversation: The Life and Music of Stan Rogers (both for Penguin), Out of the World: The Natural History of Milton Acorn (Arsenal), and The Naked Truth: The Untold Story of Sex in Canada (Greystone).

I’ve also contributed to dozens of magazines and newspapers including Playboy, MAD, National Lampoon, TV Guide, The Advocate, Canadian Wildlife and BC Outdoors.

I’m active in TV and film, with credits that include creating the Gemini-award-winning reality show Ghost Trackers (YTV/HBO Family), the ground-breaking cross-platform series GeoFreakz (Teletoon, Kabillion), and documentary feature, The Trick with the Gun (Showtime).

In my various and spotty career, I’ve worked as a psychiatric orderly, bartender, rodeo clown, rock musician, door-to-door bible salesperson, and youth outreach worker. I’m founder of It Gets Better Canada, a national not-for-profit that supports LGBTQ2+ youth.
