Ron Thompson grew up in Saskatchewan. He has been a naval officer, development worker, civil servant, economist, investment banker, and consultant.
Ron's satiric first novel, A Person of Letters, was published in 2015. His second novel, Poplar Lake, was published in 2018. Terry Fallis, winner of the Leacock Medal, called Poplar Lake “a captivating story, rich with humour and heart. I didn’t want it to end.” “Thompson’s got everything here to make a great Canadian novel,” reviewer Bill Robertson said in the Star-Phoenix, “and he goes a long way to writing just that.” Ron's latest book, the historical novel The Wind From All Directions, was published in early 2024. "Thompson takes the historical record and adds nuance, drama, and a touch of magical realism to bring a remarkable story to life," said Governor-General's Award winner Don Gillmor of it. "History gives us the results and Thompson gives us the compelling narratives." Ron's short fiction has appeared in Canadian Voices (Bookland Press), his short compositions on the surrealist-inspired website Exquisite Corpse, and his historical commentaries in the literary publication The Burney Letter.
Ron is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Toronto, the London School of Economics, and the Humber School for Writers. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
