Event: Sep 25, 2022

First Nations author Rick Revelle is one of five writers reading from their work at the River City Reading Series on Saturday, September 24, 7 p.m. at Medium Effort Art Supplies, 162 King Street West in downtown Brockville.

The River City Reading Series aims to introduce readers to writers from Eastern Ontario and beyond. River City brings in a mix of new and established poetry, spoken word and fiction writers to enrich, enlighten and entertain.

Hosted and produced by writer, comedian, and newly transplanted Torontonian Carolyn Bennett, the literary series had a trial run in April at From Here to Infinity Gallery on King Street. One of the goals of the series is to animate local businesses.

“Brockville has a beautiful historic downtown,” says Bennett. “Holding the literary night in different spaces gives audiences an opportunity to explore unique local businesses while engaging with Canadian writers.”

Rick Revelle will be reading from his new novel The Elk Whistle Warrior Society. The evening includes readings from poet, actor and educator Lois Lorimer, speculative fiction writer Sandra J. Jackson, essayist and poet Christopher A. Taylor, and writer/comic and host Bennett. A Q&A session will follow.

“With more people from urban centres moving into Brockville and the Greater Ottawa Area (GOA), arts and culture will continue to grow. River City Reading Series seeks to complement the existing literary community while encouraging professional arts practitioners,” says Bennett.

The River City Reading Series is free to attend and is part of this year’s Ontario Culture Days. Covid-19 protocols will be observed and mask wearing is encouraged.

The River City Reading Series gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Writers’ Union of Canada.
