Biography

Dean Jobb writes historical true crime. A Gentleman and a Thief, his latest book, tells the story of a Jazz Age burglar who charmed New York’s elite and stole jewels worth millions from their posh estates. The NewYork Times Book Review describes it as “delectably entertaining” and the Globe and Mail calls it a “rollicking real-life heist story.” It’s a NewYork Times Editors’ Choice a Canadian bestseller, and a finalist for the Crime Writers of Canada Award for Excellence in nonfiction. His previous book, The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream, recreates Scotland Yard’s hunt for a Canadian serial killer who terrorized Victorian London. His 2015 book Empire of Deception, the tale of a fugitive Chicago swindler who hid out in Nova Scotia in the 1920s, has been hailed by Esquire magazine as one of the best biographies of all time. All three books are published by HarperCollins Canada and in the U.S. by Algonquin Books. He is also the author of two collections of true crime stories drawn from Nova Scotia's past. 

Deans books have won the CrimeCon CLUE and Chicago Writers Association Nonfiction Book of the Year awards, the Crime Writers of Canada Award for True Crime Book of the Year, and the Evelyn Richardson Nonfiction Award. He is also a finalist for the American Library Association's Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, the Writers Union of Canada Hilary Weston Prize for Nonfiction, and the National Business Book Award. His books have been translated into French, Japanese and other languages. His monthly true crime column, “Stranger Than Fiction,” appears in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and he has written for Air Mail, CrimeReads, the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, The Irish Times and other major publications. He is a professor emeritus at the University of King’s College in Halifax, where he teaches in the MFA in Creative Nonfiction program.
