BIO
Biography
Arnel’s journey is one of resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to health equity and social justice. After immigrating from the Philippines to Canada in 2008, he began working in a factory before transitioning to healthcare, serving as a personal support worker, registered practical nurse, and registered nurse in long-term care.
He holds degrees in Economics and Nursing from the Philippines, and went on to complete an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master’s in Health, and a Ph.D. in Health (Health Policy and Equity) at York University. He also supported research and student learning as a teaching assistant from 2016 to 2022.
Now an assistant professor at the Rankin School of Nursing, St. Francis Xavier University, Arnel teaches courses in research, leadership, and professional role transition. His research explores the political economy of health, focusing on housing, food, income, employment, and the intersecting impacts of class, race, gender, age, and geography.
From frontline care to academia, Arnel continues to advance critical conversations and action toward a more just, equitable, and healthier world for all.
