Gail Madjzoub's writing comprises primarily novel-length creative nonfiction and fiction, which straddle the categories of historic, contemporary, literary, upmarket, and family saga.
Decades of experience in the fields of health, education, community development and NGO work on three continents, as well as fluency in several languages have deepened Gail's keen engagement with and writing about human rights, the equality of women, freedom of expression, and educational & economic justice.
In writing about these issues she has to a large extent focused on Iran, whose culture and language have been a significant part of her adult life. Crimson Ink, published in 2019, is the first volume of a trilogy. The second volume, Fetters and Freedom, is nearing completion and the third volume, Crimson Land, is in its initial stages. The series takes place from 1955 to the present day mostly in Iran. It traces the unexpectedly intertwined lives of several unrelated families against the backdrop of the socio-economic and geopolitical turbulence before, during, and the 45+ years after its Islamic Revolution.
For a country where freedom of expression is a chimera, 'Giving Voice to the Voiceless' is a significant part of the trilogy's raison d'être.
Gail is also doing research for a new project in creative nonfiction. Playing out in Norway, Sweden, Finland, France and Germany, it is the story of a Nordic family's constructive resilience, resistance and unassuming heroism under Nazi occupation in the 1940s.
Gail enjoys applying various art forms and handcrafts to community-building activities for all ages; taking time to contemplate the universe while immersing herself in nature; and in the long evenings of the cold months, reading, crocheting and doing puzzles. Spending time with her large family is one of her greatest pleasures.
She is an active member of Federation of BC Writers & the Salish Sea Writers Group and lives on Vancouver Island.
Writing about difficult subjects as a means to writing for change or to create awareness.
