Biography

Helena is the author of five nonfiction books including The Mad Trapper: The Incredible Tale of a Famous Canadian Manhunt (Altitude, 2004) and Justice Miscarried: Inside Wrongful Convictions in Canada (Dundurn, 2011). Her latest book, Dispatches from Canada's North (2025), is a memoir that delves into the question of "Where is home" as she leaves a trendy neighbourhood in downtown Montreal for life on a small alpaca farm on the outskirts of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. She is a former reporter with the Montreal Gazette who is proud to live alongside and learn from the Salt River First Nation, Tthebatthie Denesuline Nation and Northwest Territory Metis Nation of the Thebacha region.
