Jane Harris

Biography

Jane  Harris is a Canadian author, poet, and essayist with a strong background in journalism. Her published essays, books, and articles turn complex research into engaging scenes and easily understood messages. 

Finding Home in the Promised Land, a personal history of homelessness and social exile in Canada, was published in 2015 by J. Gordon Shilllingford Publishing (jgshillingford.com) and Signature Editions in 2016. Eugenics and the Firewall: Canada’s Nasty Little Secret (J.Gordon Shillingford Publishing Inc. 2010) was her first book by a literary publisher. Jane’s Recent essay contributions include “A Poet Get Up from the Table” in Impact, Women Writing About Concussion (U of A Press 2021) and “Waiting for a Hero” in Waiting, an Anthology (University of Alberta Presss 2020). Her essay “The Unheard Patient” Alberta Views (Nov 2015) won a 2016 Alberta Literary Award. 

Additional anthology contributions include "Jessie's Generation: Canada's Firebrands of Mercy and Justice" in Hot Apple Cider: Words to Stir the Heart and Warm the Soul (That's Life! Communications 2008) and "Wen-Dizing the West" in Taking Care of Business (HB Fenn, 1997). She self-published her first book, Stars Appearing: The Galts’ Vision of Canada (Volumes), in 2006.  

She is a member of the Writers' Union of Canada and the Writers' Guild of Alberta.
