Mary Woo Sims 沈明麗 LL.D (she/her) is the former Chief Human Rights Commissioner for British Columbia and is the recipient of honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees, honoris causa from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. Her storied career began in the labour movement and her coalition building and community work have been recognized in part by the Chinese Canadian National Council (now CCNC-SJ), the Vancouver & District Labour Council, Toronto SUN Newspaper “Women on the Move Award,” the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies, and the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto “Honouring Our Heroes Award.” She co-founded the Vancouver “Women Against Violence Against Women Rape Crisis Centre” (now known as Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre).
Her publications include “Mother” (Becoming Feminists: An Anthology of How We Became Feminists), “Afterword” (Anti-Asian Violence in North America), “Why Trans-gendered People Need Human Rights Protection” (Herizons), and a weekly opinion column “Face to Face” in the Tri-City News, a newspaper for residents of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, BC.
