Steven M. Silva is a Toronto-born educator, educational leader, and author of Portuguese (Madeiran) descent. A secondary school teacher, department head, and vice-principal with over 20 years of experience in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), he has taught across languages, the arts, and Canadian and world studies, fostering intercultural understanding and a commitment to safe, equitable and inclusive learning environments. His academic background includes French Studies and Geography, and he holds a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics from York University with a focus on second-language instruction. He is currently on secondment to the Ontario College of Teachers as a Bilingual Program Officer in the Standards of Practice & Education Unit.
As Senior Author, Steven has written several French as a Second Language learning resources for R.K. Publishing Inc., including Tu parles! 1, Tu parles! 2, On parle! and A Companion Teacher’s Resource for Ontario Core French, Grade 9 De-streamed. Flight Path Home is Steven’s debut memoir-in-essays and a heartfelt tribute to the resilience of the Madeiran community in Canada. Rooted in a deep passion for storytelling and cultural preservation, his work explores themes of migration, belonging, and the Portuguese diaspora, drawing inspiration from family narratives, travel, and a lifelong connection to Portuguese culture. When he is not working, he loves travelling and spending time with family, friends, and his cats.
