A class action lawsuit in the U.S. concerning the training of artificial intelligence using pirated books has recently been settled. News about the approved settlement in Bartz v. Anthropic can be found here.
Canadian books that meet certain conditions (registration with the U.S. Copyright Office, found in specific pirated datasets, etc.) are included in the class in this case.
The settlement website for class action is now live and can be found here:
www.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com
It includes comprehensive information about the case and settlement, including a searchable tool to see if your books are included in the settlement and a claim form. The website also lists multiple avenues for you to get any questions answered.
If you need assistance or any more information, please reach out directly to the settlement administrators through the channels identified on the website. The Writers’ Union of Canada has no direct involvement in administering this settlement, which was decided under U.S. law.
