Andreas Schroeder
BIO
Biography

Andreas Schroeder was born to a Mennonite family in Germany, 1946. He emigrated to Canada in 1951. He attended the Universities of British Columbia and Toronto from 1965-71, and obtained his B.A. and M.A. in comparative literature and creative writing. He travelled throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East, before settling on a mountaintop tower near Mission, B.C. where he lived for 27 years. In 1999 he moved to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast (BC). He has been writing full-time since 1971, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, radio drama, journalism, translation and criticism. Schroeder has occasionally suffered from attacks of certifiable dementia, during which he invariably committed cultural politics: chair, Writers' Union of Canada, 1976, head of the Union's PLR crusade from 1976 to 1986, then founding chair of the PLR Commission, 1986-88. He recently retired from UBC Creative Writing, where he held the Maclean-Hunter Chair in Creative Non-Fiction for over 20 years. His work has been published in 23 books, 58 anthologies and dozens of magazines. Book titles include those listed below. In 2016, following three major surgeries for a recurring tumour in the head, Andreas found himself unable to continue writing.
