Deirdre Kessler is an author, poet, and former Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island.
Her most recent publication is a novel, Darwin's Hornpipe, published by Penumbra Press.
She is a sessional professor of creative writing, children's literature, and the course on L.M. Montgomery with the University of Prince Edward Island Department of English.
Among her 28 published books are 18 books for children, including Adventures of an Island Cat Named Brupp (Indigo Press, 2023) and Canadian Book Centre Award-winning novels about a cat named Brupp, a Maritime classic picture book, Lobster in My Pocket, illustrated by Brenda Jones, Lena and the Whale, and Dreamtime.
She has been a writer in residence in many locations in Canada as well as in Hobart, Tasmania, and Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Her books have been translated into Dutch and German and she has toured in The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, as well as in the U.S.A. Her poetry includes Afternoon Horses, The Jubilance of Jig, Subtracting by Seventeen, and Rearranging the Sky.
