Geoff Inverarity lives on the West Coast of Canada. He holds an LLB and MA Hons from the University of Aberdeen; PhD from University of Queens, Kingston; and MFA from the University of British Columbia. He's produced and written a number of award-winning short films, taught literature and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia, and has also won awards for his screenplays, poetry, and non-fiction prose. He is currently the Director of the Galiano Island Poetry Festival. His poetry collection, All the Broken Things, was published by Anvil Press in 2021.

How to Write a Short Screenplay for Absolute Beginners. In 60 minutes, I will guide the group through all the stages of writing a short screenplay, with an emphasis on story structure and formatting.
Using a simple joke I demonstrate the three act structure, showing how even a simple joke is a small story, how it has a beginning, a middle, and an end; or, to put it in other terms. an Inciting Incident or Set Up, a Development or Confrontation, and a Resolution or Pay Off. With the use of a free screenwriting app, students collaborate on turning an idea into a professionally formatted screenplay.
