Biography

Catharine M. Mastin, PhD is an independent scholar, writer and curator with specializations in modern art and feminism, and is an Adjunct Member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Art History, York University, Toronto. She is an experienced arts administrator and curator, having served as the 6th Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Windsor (2010-2020), Senior Art Curator, Glenbow Museum, Calgary (1995-2006), and Curator of Canadian Art, Art Gallery of Windsor (1989-95). Her PhD featured six women artists in artist-couple relationships in postwar Canada. She has published and spoken widely on Canadian art. Her most recent publications include Cobalt: A Mining Town and the Canadian Imagination (McMichael Canadian Art Collection, 2024), Marion Nicoll: Life & Work (Art Canada Institute, 2022), and essays in Frances-Anne Johnston (2022), Frances Loring and Florence Wyle in Uninvited: Women in the Modern Moment (2021), Brenda Francis Pelkey Territories (2017), and Mary Pratt (2013).  She is currently writing the first biography of Group of Seven co-founder, Franklin Carmichael.
