Hidden Flowers (Heritage House, 2025), named to CBC Books' 45 Must-Read Books of Fall 2025, uncovers stories of strength and beauty in places most people never notice.
The Broken Map Home (Caitlin Press, 2025) presents Honda's translation of her late grandfather's extraordinary account of survival, repatriation, and the long journey home from Korea after Japan's surrender in 1945.
Both books required Honda to become a translator—not just between Japanese and English, but between silence and speech, between what was hidden and what needed to be seen. Hidden Flowers asked her to make the invisible visible. The Broken Map Home asked her to carry her grandfather's voice across seventy years and two languages while honoring what remained unspoken.
Honda will discuss her writing journey for both books: the craft decisions, the ethical questions, the challenge of bearing witness to difficult histories while finding beauty without erasing complexity. She'll share what she learned about translation in its deepest sense—as an act of attention, discovery, and care.
