Mitchell Toews is a Manitoba fiction writer. 157 literary journals and anthologies have published his work since 2016. Mitch's short story "All Our Swains Commend Her" was nominated by Pulp Literature for the 2025 Writers' Trust of Canada McClelland & Stewart JOURNEY PRIZE. He is a four-time Pushcart Prize nominee with numerous strong showings in national and US story contests, including a finalist listing in the 2023 Nona Macdonald Heaslip $15,000 “Best Canadian Short Story” Competition and Award. His story "Second Helping at Conchita's Diner" took a runner-up placement in the 2026 Pulp Literature Raven Short Story Contest and he is a longlisted finalist in the Claret Press 2026 Short Story Competition (UK).
Mitch's debut short story collection, “Pinching Zwieback” (At Bay Press), launched in October 2023. The collection comprises loosely related stories focused on life experiences in the fictional Mennonite prairie town of “Hartplatz." Strong reviews, several appearances on local bestseller lists, book club participation, and growing critical recognition for the book are early hallmarks. The story "Fall from Grace" was cited as a Mentor Text by Moving Writers.
An agreement was made between Mitchell and a small Canadian press to publish a second collection of short fiction. Deal news to follow in May 2026.
A second work—a coming-of-age novel set in the Manitoba boreal is forthcoming, planned for a May 2027 launch, again with Winnipeg's At Bay Press.
