As part of the National Public Readings Program with funding support from the Canada Council for the Arts through The Writers’ Union of Canada, Hartmann will read from her book The Nail That Sticks Out: Reflections on the Postwar Japanese Canadian Community. A Q-&-A session will follow. Admission is free.
The book has been featured in CBC’s “54 Works of Canadian nonfiction to check out this fall,” Vancouver’s The Bulletin, the Toronto Star, Nikkei Voice and the Japanese American National Museum’s Discover Nikkei.
Published by Dundurn Press in October 2024, The Nail That Sticks Out explores an evolving community and tackles issues of identity, belonging and racism. Steeped in history and cultural arts, it includes portraits of family and community members.
