Write welcomes pitches from TWUC members and non-members alike who are Canadian citizens, newcomers, or permanent residents. Please keep the following in mind when pitching a story: 

• Write consists of a mix of commissioned articles and pitches stories.
• We publish four times a year, and some of our issues have themes. This leaves a limited amount of space for stories resulting from unsolicited pitches.
• We do not accept unsolicited completed articles. If you submit a completed article as a pitch, it will not be read. Please send a pitch instead.
• We appreciate all pitches, but we are not able to respond to each one.

Please note: Pitch calls generate large numbers of pitches and it is not possible for our team to respond to each one. We will only respond to pitches we feel will work for the issue at hand. If you have not heard back on a pitch within a month, you may wish to seek other outlets for your story.

Pitch Format

If you do not follow the guidelines below, your pitch may go unread. When pitching an article, please include the following:

• Email subject line: "WRITE Magazine Pitch: [Your Name]"
• A brief description of the article you are proposing, including whether it's a short piece or a feature.
• The reason you think the piece is timely and relevant to members of the Union/readers of Write.
• Why you think you are the best person to write it.
• A brief bio, including where you are writing from.
• Links to other published work are helpful, but not essential.

Article Length

We generally run three different article lengths:

• Short pieces at the front and back of the magazine: 650 words
• Mini-features: 1,000 to 1,200 words
• Features: 2,000 words

Editorial Calendar

Write is published four times a year, on the following schedule:

• Winter issue published mid-February
• Spring issue published mid-May
• Summer issue published mid-August
• Fall issue published mid-November

Write considers pitches year-round. Stories are assigned following an Editorial Board Meeting, generally held about 3 months before publication. Please keep these timelines in mind when pitched (e.g. early November is a good time to pitch a story for the Winter issue). 

Payment and Terms

Contributors are paid $0.25/word, based on the assigned word count. You retain copyright to your story and may republish it after 30 days of its publication in Write. If your pitch is accepted, you will receive an assignment letter outlining all the terms. 

Letters to the Editor

Write welcomes letters to the editor. Respectful, thoughtful, and cogent letters in direct response to the most recent issue will be considered for publication in the next issue.

Send your letter (150–300 words) and a short bio (max. 50 words) to Write Editor Philip Moscovitch at write@writersunion.ca. Write reserves the right to edit letters to the editor for length, clarity, and accuracy. You will be notified if your letter is selected for publication.
